Here are some ideas and tips to help you prepare for your workshop:
Buy the book, Hold Me Tight by Dr. Sue Johnson – as you are probably aware, the HMT workshops are based on the information in the book and many of the exercises you find in the book will be a part of the workshop. Reading a few chapters, ahead of time, will give you some wonderful background information about the science of love and what we know today about how adult relationships work.
- If you have been struggling a bit, already, in your relationship, you may be worried about what might come out during the workshop and how this might affect you both. Don’t worry – the leaders are extremely prepared to help couples navigate difficult discussions. All the exercises will be done with your partner in a separate area for privacy. As well, the leaders will spend some time with each couple supporting them in doing the exercises and and in the process –leaders are there to make the experience a rewarding and enlightening one.
- Try to relax and accept that some difficult feelings may come up, which is part of the process and part of the way to gain some knowledge about your relationship – sometimes we have to go through this to get to the other side – a healthier and more knowledgeable partnership.
- Ask lots of questions – some of these concepts may seem new to you so feel free to ask for clarification. As well, you may find that these ideas actually make so much sense and will really help both of you accept one another and be more patient with one another as you journey through the workshop together.
Finally, congratulations for putting your relationship first! It’s the more important thing you can do to support one another and to create a secure and loving bond.
